Tricia & Ryan: Portland Wedding Photographer (Part 1)

I’m splitting today’s wedding into two posts because there are two very distinct parts to it, beginning with a traditional Vietnamese ceremony at the bride’s home on the morning of her wedding.  When I arrived, the home was buzzing with excitement and family, and I was greeted by this adorable face:

Traditionally, on the day of the wedding, the procession of the groom’s family is led by the representative of the groom’s house (usually the oldest male – in this case, the groom’s uncle), followed by the groom, the groom’s father, then the rest of his family and close friends. In the procession, Ryan, his family, and his friends carried elaborately decorated lacquer boxes containing gifts representing the wealth the groom’s family will bring to the bride’s. As the Portland rain fell softly on this spring morning, Ryan’s family approached the house with their gifts covered in red cloth representing good luck (usually including, among other things, an abundance of jewelry for the bride).

Once the procession arrived at the house, electric fireworks were set off to welcome them.

Members of both families were formally introduced to each other, Ryan presented his gifts to Tricia’s family, and the fathers on both sides enjoyed a drink together:

After the drinks were shared, Ryan received permission to greet Tricia, who was finally brought out:

Once Tricia was presented, the permission ceremony began in front of the bride’s ancestor altar where Tricia and Ryan lit candle and burned incense sticks, asking for the blessings of their ancestors:

Then the couple each thanks their parents for raising and protecting them.

The groom’s gift boxes filled with jewelry were opened by each mother, who put them on Tricia for good fortune:

And finally, each family member in attendance was introduced to Tricia and Ryan, presenting them with gifts:

We stepped outside for a few more photos:

And the family had a feast:

What an honor to be part of such an important cultural tradition!  For the rest of Tricia and Ryan’s wedding, please see the post below.
