I’m thrilled to say that Robin delivered on every promise she makes on her website. Because of the specific instruction I was looking for, I opted for her 1:1 mentoring program, which typically includes two models, and two hours of post-processing tutorials and Q&As at the end. Since I didn’t really want the post-processing, we replaced the last two hours with an additional newborn, giving us a total of three wonderfully perfect, fresh-from-heaven models and a full eight hour day of shooting with a short lunch break in the middle. When I arrived, Robin had an assortment of pastries waiting for me, and we got right down to business.
“Some people dream of success while others wake up and work hard at it.”
Also tucked in the bag was her signature PureBaby Nest Wrap, and some other treats including a lot of fantastic discounts (that I can certainly say I’ve already used). I also received a copy of her PureBaby Posing Book, featuring 80 pages of everything from posing to transitioning, setting up to prepping parents, soothing techniques, props, and post-processing. She thought of everything!
After some preliminary instructions, the first baby arrived and we got to work. After the second baby, we had gone through every signature pose, even touching on the best order of posing and easy means of transition so the babies are the least disturbed. When the third baby came around, it was my turn to take all the information and put it to good use. I chose the poses, I staged the set, and I hand-picked from her endless supply of headbands, beanies, blankets, and baskets. It was my show, and she stood by to provide any additional instruction along the way. I didn’t expect the last part, and it turned out to be the most priceless part of the process. I’m such a hands-on learner, and no matter how much I listen and watch, the second I do it myself it’s as if I hadn’t been watching for the last five hours. Everything flew out of my brain, and Robin talked me through the poses again as I did them myself. Here’s a peek at the first set I chose: a pale blanket that photographed beautifully, and a simple grey flower:

I’ll feature the other little ones throughout the rest of the week, but in the meantime I will definitely say that Robin’s workshop is worth every penny. It’s priced much lower than the other newborn workshops out there, and it’s clear that Robin teaches because she loves to. She loves photographing newborns and she loves mentoring other photographers. She’s not in it for the money. She’s humble, and she’s open with her information. She even sends you home with her full set of business forms, product and pricing information, and a priceless nursing guide that I would have never thought of. The best news is that she’s taking her show on the road, with six workshops throughout the United States (including a stop in Canada):
Chicago, IL Newborn Photography Workshop – June 20, 2011
St. Louis, MO Newborn Photography Workshop – June 27, 2011
San Diego Newborn Photography Workshop – August 22, 2011
Sacramento, CA Newborn Photography Workshop – August 26, 2011
Toronto, ON Canada Newborn Photography Workshop – September 24, 2011

Hi Jane, I have been enjoying Robin’s beautiful work as she posts on facebook. I have also checked out her workshops. Yes, newborns are a lot of work and I hope to focus more and more on them as it is magical what you can capture. It is great to hear that the workshop was worthy. I will add her workshop to my to list for in the future.
PS. I hope to meet you soon – being a fellow Bendite and all! Love your work

Thank you so much for the post! I’ve put her Sacto session on my wish list. Beautiful pic. Can’t wait to see the rest!!
Wow! Thank you for this insightful blog post! I’ve been thinking about attending a newborn workshop this year but I used the exact same word you used “justify”. How can I justify paying $1500 for 1-day of mentoring. I will check out Robin Long. She sounds phenomenal!
