This last January, Josh and I spent an amazing two week vacation in Cancun with the front end of the trip set aside strictly for photographing Brian and Jordann’s wedding. And I’ll be honest, going from four days of constant company with two dozen people to just the two of us was quite a shock to the system. The Kearns wedding was a small, intimate affair that took place at sunset looking out onto the Caribbean Sea. With the quaint Azul Beach Hotel as our home, we had our fill of hanging beds by the water and picture-perfect bungalow docks that were used for both the wedding day as well as their day-after fashion shoot. But even though the backdrop was perfect… the wedding was a question mark.
The day before the wedding, right around the time that the rehearsal began, Brian got hit with a lovely bout of Montezuma’s Revenge. Although he made it through the actual rehearsal, he wasn’t able to make it to the rehearsal dinner. As a bride I can imagine how emotional that could be, but Jordann was surrounded by her closest friends. And they encouraged her every step of the way.
The morning of the wedding greeted us with torrential downpours. The kind where you’re soaked to the skin if you’re out in it for just a few seconds.
Still feeling very sick, he rallied. He walked to the end of the dock to wait for his bride. And, after one last mirror check, she hiked up her skirt, and walked barefoot through the sand to meet her awaiting groom.
The rain was done for the day and, right before they had their official kiss, a flock of birds flew overhead. And though Brian was weak, he stayed through to the end of the reception. Even if it meant sitting in a chair while everyone danced around him. And as the couple made their way back to their room for the night, everyone else made a beeline for the ocean. And I set my camera aside and joined them. After all, a Carribbean party isn’t complete without a midnight swim.
