A Maui Proposal: John & Adrienne

John contacted me a handful of weeks ago with a top secret plan up his sleeve. He was planning to propose to his girlfriend, and he wanted me to photograph every second of it. So I put on the hat of “maui proposal photographer” and accepted the challenge.

“Sure!” I said. “So exciting!! Yes, I’d love to hide in the bushes for you! What’s your plan?”

John and Adrienne met at Starbucks for their first date. But the coffee shop was too busy and too loud for any meaningful conversation. So they ditched that plan and walked across the street to the beach. And found a bench. And sat there for quite awhile, having those first, awkward, getting-to-know-you, first date types of conversations.

So it only seemed fitting to take Adrienne back to that bench where it all began. And taking it one step further, it was her birthday weekend.

You’ll see in the photos below that there wasn’t really an area to hide. And, even more complicated, Adrienne knew me. So I couldn’t be just a stranger enjoying the view. I had to get creative, and wear a hat, and bring a stroller to hide the camera in until they were in position.

Three minutes before they arrived, a sweet elderly woman sat down on their bench. I felt terrible running over and asking her to move, but when I explained the situation, she happily agreed. And I went back to my “just a mom with her babe, staring at the ocean” perch just in time for them to walk up.

They sat down, and John pulled a book he had made for her birthday that showcased all the reasons he loved her. On the very last page was a photo of him. Sitting on that bench. Holding a ring box. As she neared the end of the book, John flashed a hand signal so I could get into position. And then he dropped down on his knee. And proposed.

Shortly after the proposal, John whisked his new fiancée off to a surprise engagement party where family waited with champagne. As well as Adrienne’s best friend that he secretly flew in to celebrate with them.

We’ll be taking some official engagement portraits in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, here’s their proposal story!
